Proof of Work

A consensus mechanism where participants expend computational effort to earn the right to add a block.

Proof of Work at a glance
Mining searches for a nonce whose hash is below the difficulty target Candidate block prev: 0000…b2 merkle: a3f9…7c nonce = 0 hash SHA-256 + nonce ~10^18 hashes/s network-wide Compare with target your hash 31a0c7… (too high) target 000000… (leading zeros) Not below target → nonce++, retry Hash below target ✓ Block accepted & broadcast ~10 min expected per block Why this makes history expensive Each guess is independent — there is no shortcut. Rewriting a block means redoing all the work after it, while honest miners keep extending the real chain.

In simple terms

Miners guess a number (nonce) until the block hash meets a target. It is expensive to produce but trivial to verify.

Analogy

A tamper-evident wax seal that took enormous effort to make but anyone can check.

Going deeper

Difficulty retargets every 2,016 blocks on Bitcoin to hold a 10-minute average. Security follows from re-mining cost: reversing k confirmations means redoing the work of the whole honest network for k blocks, racing against fresh honest work the entire time.

Common mistake

Confusing "hard to compute" with "hard to verify". Verification is deliberately cheap.
